The Unofficial Guide to Mexican food in Santa Cruz

Tacos Moreno

Tacos Moreno is an old favorite, so my bias may show. I thought Moreno would be a great first restaurant to review, mainly because in my opinion it is the best Mexican cousine in town, outside of Watsonville at least.

The Meal: Two al pastor tacos with a sprite

The Cost: 9.36 $

Salsa:

The salsa at Tacos Moreno is some of my favorite. It comes in a bottle (seen above) and is just hot enough for my liking. I have heard others complain because they don’t think it’s chunky enough, or it’s not hot enough/too hot for them, but for me the salsa is excellent.

☆ Four Stars

Meat:I usually order al pastor as my meat, and today was no exception. The al pastor at Moreno is fantastic. It’s not quite dry, but it’s not nearly as greasy as other places. I can’t get enough of it. From past experiences, the carne asada isn’t as special as the al pastor, but is still delicious. The carnitas is exquisite as well.

☆ 5 Stars

Authenticity: My associate Matt and I have a motto for Mexican places: if it looks like a hole-in-the-wall, it’s probably pretty good. That is especially true at Tacos Moreno.  It’s the sketchy, barely lit bathroom. It’s the Mexican cokes and sprites. It’s the people who run the restaurant (including the owner, this woman). Mostly, however, it’s the food and atmosphere that makes eating good Mexican food in Santa Cruz all so special.

☆ 5 Stars

The Verdict: Overall, Tacos Moreno is an excellent Mexican restaurant. The salsa is great, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the food is delicious. I recommend Tacos Moreno to anyone and everyone.
